The Potocki Mausoleum was founded by Aleksander Potocki to commemorate his parents Stanisław Kostka Potocki and Aleksandra (nee Lubomirska) Potocka. This oustanding Neo-Gothic monument was inspired by the medieval sarcophagus of Polish King Casimir III the Great in Wawel Cathedral in Kraków.
The musoleum was designed by Henryk Marconi in 1834 and entirely made of sandstone. Marconi was an Italian architect who settled in Warsaw. He designed many beautiful buildings in the Polish capital as well as in other Polish cities.
Stanisław Kostka Potocki and Aleksandra Potocka were one the most honored owners of Wilanów Palace. In 1805 they opened the first public museum in Poland, housed in the northern wing of the palace. Today you can still see a Latin sentence on the floor “Entrance free for all”. They believed that people are better when they have contact with art.
